Oxidising Ability Of Halogens Flashcards
What is meant by oxidation ability ?
The power to take electrons away from something else and cause something to be oxidised
What is the oxidising ability of halogens ?
Oxidising ability decreases down the group 7
Why does the oxidising ability depend on ?
The ability depends on the attraction between the atoms nucleus and a second atoms electrons
So why’d eps the oxidising ability of halogens decrease ?
Because the atomic radius increases which causes more shielding of the nucleus an so there is a greater distance between the nucleus and extra / outer electrons so electrons are gained less easily
Which halogen is the best oxidising agent ?
Fluorine
Which halogen is the worst oxidising agent ?
Iodine
