Oxides And Acid/Bases Flashcards
What are the 4 metals that form amphoteric oxides?
Zn
Pb
Al
*Gallium
What kind of oxides do metals form?
Metallic Oxides are BASIC oxides.
What kind of oxides do non-metals form?
Non-metallic oxides, ACIDIC oxides
What are the reactive properties of basic oxides?
Basic oxides react with ACIDS to form salt and water
but does not react with alkalis
What are monoxides?
Neutral oxides that do not react with anything (inert)
What are the reaction properties of amphoteric oxides?
Reacts with both acids and alkali to form a salt and water.
Define a strong acid.
A substance that FULLY ionises in water to give a HIGH concentration of H+ ions
Define a weak acid.
A substance that PARTIALLY ionises to give a LOW concentration of H+ ions.
What are the physical properties of acids?
- Tastes sour
- pH less than 7
- turns damp blue litmus red, turns green universal indicator red.
- Conducts electricity
What are the 3 rxns of acids?
- Acid + Base —-> Salt + Water
- Acid + Reactive Metal ——> Salt + Hydrogen gas.
- Acid + Metal Carbonate —–> Salt + CO2+ H20
What is the definition of a base?
Bases are oxides and hydroxides of metals.
How soluble are bases?
All bases are insoluble in water except grp 1 metal and calcium oxides/hydroxide
What are the physical properties of alkalis?
Ph > 7
Turns damp red litmus paper blue, and turns green UI blue/purple
conducts electricity
What are alkali reactions?
- Alkali + Acid —-> Salt + Water
- Alkali + Ammonium salt —-> Salt + Ammonia gas + water
- Alkali + Metal salt —-> Insoluble metal hydroxide + soluble salt
