oxidation states Flashcards
check notes for calculating oxidation states
what is meant by the term oxidation state ?
- the number of electrons something needs to lose or gain to become neutral
what is the oxidation state of uncombined elements ?
e.g Na , Fe and why ?
oxidation state = 0
- because they are already neutral
what is the oxidation state of diatomic molecules ?
oxidation state = 0
what is the oxidation state on simple ions?
e.g CL- Cu2+
oxidation state is the same as the charge
state the oxidation state of Al2O3
(Al +3 , O -2)
how can oxidation states be worked out ?
oxidation states can be worked out from an elements position in the periodic table
what oxidation states do group 3 elements form ?
form 3+ ions
oxidation state = +3
what do group 6 elements form in terms of oxidation states ?
form 2- ions
oxidation state = -2
what is the oxidation state of oxygen and what are the xceptions ?
oxygen will have an oxidation state of -2 unless its in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or in a compound with fluorine (F)
what is the oxidation state of oxygen in H2O2 ?
-1
what is the oxidation state of oxygen in a compound with fluorine ?
positive +2
what kind of oxidation states do transition metals have ?
transition metals have varying oxidation states
what is the oxidation state of iron in Iron (II) oxide ?
oxidation state is the same as the stock notation
= +2
What is the oxidation states of group 4 ions ?
They don’t usually form ions
