Oxidation States Flashcards
What does the oxidation state tell you?
The amount of electrons that have been lost or gained compared to the unreacted element.
What is the oxidation state useful for?
Naming inorganic compounds, identifying what has been reduced and oxidised in a reaction, identifying the oxidising agent, and balancing redox equations.
What is the oxidation state for all atoms in elements?

What is the oxidation state of a simple ion?
It’s the same as the charge on the ion.
What must all oxidation states in a compound add up to?
The overall charge of the compound.
