Oxidation, Reduction and displacement reactions Flashcards
1
Q
What is oxidation?
A
•Oxidation is when a metal gains oxygen
2
Q
What is reduction?
A
•Reduction is when a metal oxide looses oxygen
3
Q
What is a displacement reaction?
A
- A displacement reaction is when a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal
- Mg + CuSO -» MgSO + Cu
4
Q
How can you extract copper from an ore?
A
- By using carbon
- If you heat it with carbon the carbon will displace the copper as it is more reactive
- you will then get the copper on its own
- This applies to all metals less reactive than carbon
5
Q
How can we extract Aluminium from ore?
A
- By using molten electrolysis
- molten electrolysis is used because aluminium is not soluble in water
- At the cathode Aluminium ions will gain electrons to form Aluminium atoms
- At the anode oxide ions will lose electrons to become oxygen gas
- The oxygen will react with the carbon anode and produce Carbon dioxide so the anodes must be frequently changed out
