Oxidation Numbers Flashcards
What is the 1st Rule?
The Oxidation Number of an Uncombined element is zero
What is the 2nd Rule?
The Sum of the Oxidation number in a Compoundis zero.
In an ion the sum equals the overall charge
What is the 3rd Rule?
In compounds the oxidation numbers of Group 1 metal is +1 and Group 2 metal is +2
What is the 4th Rule?
The Oxidation number of Oxygen is -2 in compounds expect with flourine or in peroxides
What is the 5th Rule?
The oxidation number of hydrogen is +1 in compounds expect in metal hydrides
What is the 6th Rule?
In Chemical Species with atoms of more than one element, the most electronegative element is given the negative oxidation number
When are Oxidation numbers used?
