Oxidation And Reduction Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of oxidation and reduction
A
oxidation is loss of electrons
reduction is gain of electrons
2
Q
Which side do you add the electrons to in half equations?
A
Always add the electrons to the more positive side
3
Q
What is an oxidising and reducing agent?
A
- oxidising agent causes something to be oxidised, by becoming reduced itself. An oxidising agent isn’t an electron acceptor.
- reducing agent causes something to be reduced, by becoming oxidised itself. A reducing agent is an electron donor.
4
Q
Halogen/halide ion reactions
A
All in group 7 are oxidising agents. Trend: power increases up the group.
