What do you need to do in the HGN pre-test?
- Have subject remove glasses.
- Ask if wearing contact lenses.
- Make a note if wearing hard/soft lenses.
- Give instructions.
- Check for equal tracking. (Rapidly move stimulus from far left to far right)
- Check for equal pupils.
- Check for resting nystagmus.
Which eye do you always start HGN with?
Left.
- How far should stimulus be from suspect’s face?
- What position should the stimulus be in relation to suspect’s face?
- 12-15 inches
- Slightly above eye level
What are the 4 HGN tests?
- Lack of smooth pursuit
- HGN at maximum deviation
- HGN prior to 45 degrees
- Vertical nystagmus
When checking for lack of smooth pursuit, how fast should you move the eye from the center to maximum deviation?
2 seconds
For HGN at maximum deviation:
- how long is the movement for each eye?
- how long is the hold at maximum deviation?
- 2 seconds
- 4 seconds
For HGN prior to 45 degree onset:
How long should the movement take from enter to 45 degrees?

What MUST you ask before administering the Walk and Turn test?
Any medical problems
High heels over 2” should be removed
In the Walk and Turn test, which foot goes on the line FIRST?
The right foot goes on the line first, then the left goes in front.
For the One-Leg test:

Stand straight, feet together, arms at your sides.
For the One-Leg Stand test:
How long should the officer time the test?
