Overwash morphology Flashcards
1
Q
What is an over wash?
A
Over wash is the flow of water and sediment over a coastal barrier during storm events (or other situations with high water).
Cross shore flows to the back of the island
2
Q
What is a wash over?
A
The deposit left behind from an over wash.
3
Q
What do you need for an over wash?
A
An elevated water level.
4
Q
Process of over wash morphology creating throats and lobes…
A
Start with a back barrier edge.
Multiple wash-over lobes initiate simultaneously.
As some throats merge, others are abandoned.
Headscarps grow radially into the barrier top.
Sediment plugs in some throats…
…divert/ restore flow through others
