Overview of the cardiovascular block Flashcards
What are the main functions of the CVS?
transport of O2, CO2, nutrients, metabolites and hormones. Also thermoregulation.
How is the CVS flexible?
The pump can vary output and the vessels can redirect blood flow and also store blood.
Why must the heart pump outputs be equal?
The pumps are in series and so to prevent excess blood going to the lungs must have equal output.
How is it ensured that all tissues get oxygenated blood?
Vascular beds in parallel
Due to vascular beds being in parallel what does this allow?
Regional redirection of blood
What is the pressure difference equation?
Mean arterial pressure - central venous pressure
What is the mean arterial pressure?
Pressure at the right side of the heart at the aorta leaving the heart
What is the central venous pressure?
The pressure at the vena cavae as blood is entering the heart
What is resistance controlled by?
Radius of the tube
How do arterioles act like taps?
They control resistance and therefore flow to the vascular bed
What are the elastic arteries?
aorta
What are the muscular arteries?
All other arteries in the body
What are the resistance vessels?
Arterioles
What are the capacitance vessels?
venules and veins
What does the septum in the heart do?
Separate the 2 pumps
