Overview of Sepsis Flashcards
1
Q
What is sepsis?
A
- Clinical diagnosis
- Infection causing a dysfunctional immune response leading to organ dysfunction
2
Q
How to Diagnose in Hospital?
A
- Acute confusion/altered mental state
- Hypoxic, altered resp. rate
- Low BP
- Hypoperfusion and high serum lactate
- Oliguria, dysuria, frequency, high creatinine
3
Q
Pathophysiology of sepsis?
A
Immune response is hyperactive
- Host immune response to pathogen
- Increased release of pro inflammatory mediators and cytokines
- Activate coagulation, fibrinolysis, and complement systems
- Uncontrolled inflammation=> Organ damage
4
Q
Risk factors for sepsis?
A
General - Immunocompromised - Chronic co morbidities - Extremes of Age Pregnancy - Amniocentesis - Pelvic infection - Strep B infection - Strep A infection in close contacts - Geriatric pregnancy - Premature membrane rupture - Retained products
5
Q
Common infective sources of sepsis?
A
- Resp
- UTI
- Intrabdominal
- IV
- Devices
- CNS
6
Q
Principles of Management?
A
- Optimise organ perfusion
- Eliminate the infection
- Support dysfunctional organ systems
7
Q
Principles when choosing antimcrobials?
A
- Site of infection
- Acquisition
- Previous antibiotics
- Previous microbiology
- Allergies
