Overview Info Flashcards
Parasitology
Area of biology concerned with the dependance of one organism on another (host and parasite)
Clinical/medical parisitology
Branch of parisitology dealing with animal parasites of humans
Definitive Host
A host where the parasite matures to sexual maturity and sexually reroduces in the host
Intermediate Host
Host that carries the larval fom of the parasite where asexual reproduction can occur
Vector
An invertebrate organism that spreads infection by transporting parasite pathogens from one host to another. There are mechanical and biological vectors
Mechanical Vector
transports a parasite from one host to another without any changes
Biological vectors
Transports the parasite from one host to another, and also supports the parasites life cycle or multiplication
Endoparasite
living inside the host
Ectoparasite
living on the surface of the body of the host
Prepatent period
Period between parasite entry into host and appearance into hosts tissues/ fluids (biological incubation period)
Clinical incubation period
Periodebetween parasite entry into host and occurance of symptoms
What 3 factors have to align for disease to occur?
Susecptible host, fit parasite and favourable enviroment
