Q

What is the gauge of a needle

A

Diameter of the lumen of the needle
* < gauge number = > diameter of the lumen
* 30-gauge has smaller internal diameter than a 25-gauge needle
* Patients cannot differentiate between 23,25,27 and 30 gauge needles
* > gauge needles result in less deflection as pass through tissues = > accuracy
* > gauge reduces risk of breakage
* > gauge easier aspiration – resistance to flow is greater with smaller gauged needles
