• You may pass vehicles ahead of you only if:
- A traffic sign or traffic road marking does not prohibit overtaking and only if overtaking it is safe to do so.
- The driver ahead of you indicates that he is going to turn right and you have enough room to pass on the left.
- You are travelling down a one-way street, which is wide enough for two of more vehicles to travel next to each other, whether or not lanes have been painted on the road surface.

WHEN OVERTAKING , one must:
• Indicate your intention to overtake before you change lanes by using indicators or hand signals.
- After overtaking, indicate that you intend to move back to the lane in which you were originally travelling.

WHEN OVERTAKING STATIONARY VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY BUSES
one must:
• Slow down.
• Keep a sharp lookout for passengers embarking or disembarking from the vehicles.
• Keep a sharp lookout for pedestrians and children.
WHEN BEING OVERTAKEN:
- You must keep as far left as possible.
- Do not accelerate.
- On a multi-lane road, you must move to the left-hand lane when the driver behind you indicates his intention of passing you.
TURNING RIGHT
In a Two-way road or street:
• Signal your intention to turn right
• Move to the right hand side of the road to allow following vehicles to pass on the left
• Yield to oncoming traffic
• Turn into the left lane, so that you are already on the left-hand side of the road into which you are turning
In a One-way road or street:
- Signal your intention to turn right
* Move as far to the right lane as is possible
TURNING LEFT
Signal your intention to turn left.
• Move over as far as possible to the left of the road on which you are travelling.
• Keep to the left of the road into which you are turning.
• Adjust your speed to the speed of the traffic already on the road into which you are turning so that you may easily merge with the flow of the traffic.
GENERAL SPEED LIMITS ON PUBLIC ROADS
The general speed limits on public roads are:
A. Urban or Surburban Streets and Roads. The maximum speed is 60 Km/h
B. National and Rural Roads. The maximum speed is 100 Km/h.
C. Freeways. The maximum speed is 120Km/h
TOWING
When towing another vehicle:
- The tow - rope must be securely fastened on both vehicles.
- The tow - rope must not be longer than 3.5 meters.
- The vehicle being towed must be under the control of a person with a valid driver’s License.
- This may not be the case if a solid bar is being used to tow the vehicle or if the front wheels are lifted off the road (using a tow truck).
- The maximum speed allowed for towing a vehicle is 30 km/h. This is not the case if a tow truck is being used or if a solid bar is being used.
- Passengers are not allowed in a vehicle being towed.
VEHICLE LIGHTS
- Switch on your headlights at all times between sunset and sunrise.
- Drive with your headlights switched to dim when the visibility is less than 150 meters or less.
- Drive with your head lights s switched to bright only outside built up areas.
- Switch off the brights when there are oncoming vehicles.
MOTOR CYCLES
You may not operate any motorcycle, on a public road unless all lamps fitted to such motorcycles are undamaged, properly secured and capable of being lighted at all times;
When riding a motorcycle on a public road, the headlamp must be lighted at all times. (During night and day)
LIGHT AND HEAVY VEHICLES
When using any light or heavy motor vehicle on a public road; all lamps must be undamaged, unobscured, properly secured, and capable of being lit at all times;
The headlamps, rear lamps and number plate lamps must be kept lighted during the period;
- between sunset and sunrise, and
- at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable weather conditions, persons and vehicles upon the public road are not clearly discernible at a distance of 150 metres.
Provided that these provisions shall not apply to a motor vehicle, which is parked;
• off the roadway of a public road,
• in a parking place demarcated by an appropriate road traffic sign, or
• within a distance of 12 metres from a lighted street lamp illuminating the road on which such vehicle is parked.
MAIN BEAM (BRIGHT)
Every headlamp emitting a main-beam (bright), must be so adjusted and maintained that it shall be capable of adequately illuminating an area ahead of the motor vehicle, enabling the driver/rider to see any person, vehicle or substantial object at a distance of at least 100 metres.
Remember to dip the main-beam (bright) of your vehicle for oncoming traffic, as well as when following another vehicle.
DIPPED BEAM
Every headlamp emitting a dipped-beam must be so adjusted and maintained to be capable of adequately illuminating an area ahead of the motor vehicle, enabling the driver/rider to see any person, vehicle or substantial object at a distance of at least 45 metres ahead of the motor vehicle
PARKING LIGHTS
A vehicle may not be driven on a public road with only the parking lamps lighted while such vehicle is in motion.
