overall criticisms of emotivism Flashcards

Q

overall strengths of emotivism

A

1) emotivism helps explain why people have such different moral views on many topics. there is no ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ there is just feelings and attitudes

2) emotivism recognises that disputes in ethics are often driven by feelings rather than reasons. This echoes the work of psychologist Daniel Goleman on emotional intelligence, in which he argues that the emotional part of our brain reacts before the reasoning part kicks in.

Q

overall weaknesses of emotivism

A

1) ethical debate becomes very limited to ‘I believe this’ ‘you believe that’ - renders ethical debate useless
critics suggest the debate becomes a ‘boo hurrah’ shouting match.
quite a reductionist approach
in reality, ethical debate Is far more complex than this
2) Is it even a theory- just tells us we respond with our own opinion
Vardy argues “nothing but hot air”
