Q

Histological features of serous tumours

A

Columnar “fallopian tube” epithelium, often feature psammoma bodies

Two groups:

  1. Benign = CYSTOADENOMA (simple layer of epithelium)
  2. Malignant = ADENOCARCINOMA (papillary projections ‘shaggy’)

Q

What does this image represent & what is it associated with?

(Sometimes described as ‘dystrophic calcifications’ or ‘calcific spherules’)

A

Onion-skinned and calcified histology → represents malignant calcification

Associated with:

papillary adenocarcinoma of thyroid

serous papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary

meningioma

mesothelioma

Q

What are the histological features of a endometrioid tumour?

A

Appears like endometrial like tissue.

Usually there are lesions in the uterus as well.

Q

What are some of the histological features of a Dysgerminoma?

A

Tumor separated by fibrous septae containing cytotoxic T cells and epithelioid histiocytes (look like ‘fried eggs’)

‘Nests of large cells with clear cystoplasm’

16
Q

This is a mature cystic teratoma, what types of cells are present?

A

Cartilage

Endocervical epithelium

Nerves

Adipose tissue

Salivary glands

17
Q

What type of mature teratoma can undergo malignant transformation?

A

Squamous cell carcinoma

18
Q

What are the histological features of choriocarcinoma?

A

Cytotrophoblasts

Synctiotrophoblasts

19
Q

What are the histological features of a granulosa cell?

A

Small, bland, cuboidal to polygonal cells with scant cytoplasm and pale, uniform angulated and usually grooved nuclei (coffee bean)

Lots of subtypes:

example picture of microfollicular pattern with call-exner bodies

20
Q

What are the histological features of a Sertoli Leydig cell ovarian tumour?

A

Rare type of ovarian cancer (<0.5% of ovarian neoplasms)

Intracytoplasmic Reinke crystals

21
Q

What type of tumour commonly metases to form a Krukenberg Tumour?

A

GI Adenocarcinoma (commonly diffuse gastric)

Histology = signet ring cells (which ware mucin droplets displacing the nucleus)
