Ovarian Pathology Flashcards
Four types of epithelial ovarian tumours?
- *Serous**
- *Mucinous**
- *Brenner**
- *Endometroid**
Five types of germ cell ovarian tumours?
Dysgerminoma
Yolk Sac
Choriocarcinoma
Teratoma
Embryonal
Two types of sex cord ovarain tumours?
Granulosa Cell
Sertoli Leydig Cell
One type of metastatic ovarian tumour
Krukenberg
Risk factors and protective factors for serous/ mucinous (epithelial) ovarian tumours
Risk factors: Post menopausal, BRCA 1 and Lynch Syndrome
Protective: OCP & Multiparity
Histological features of serous tumours
Columnar “fallopian tube” epithelium, often feature psammoma bodies
Two groups:
- Benign = CYSTOADENOMA (simple layer of epithelium)
- Malignant = ADENOCARCINOMA (papillary projections ‘shaggy’)
What does this image represent & what is it associated with?
(Sometimes described as ‘dystrophic calcifications’ or ‘calcific spherules’)
Onion-skinned and calcified histology → represents malignant calcification
Associated with:
papillary adenocarcinoma of thyroid
serous papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary
meningioma
mesothelioma
What are the histological features of a Brenner tumour (epithelial)?
Transitional epithelium like seen in the bladder
What are the histological features of a endometrioid tumour?
Appears like endometrial like tissue.
Usually there are lesions in the uterus as well.
What are the histological features of a mucinous ovarian tumour?
“Mucous secreting”
Two groups:
- Benign = CYSTOADENOMA (simple layer of epithelium)
- Malignant = ADENOCARCINOMA (papillary projections ‘shaggy’)
What are the distinguishing features of a Yolk Sac ovarian tumour?
Schiller-Duval bodes
What are some of the histological features of a Dysgerminoma?
Tumor separated by fibrous septae containing cytotoxic T cells and epithelioid histiocytes (look like ‘fried eggs’)
‘Nests of large cells with clear cystoplasm’
What are the two types of germ cell teratomas?
Mature
Immature
What are the features of a mature teratoma?
Well differentiated
Benign
What are the features of a immature teratoma?
Poorly differentiated
Malignant
