outer ear parts yeah Flashcards
temporal bone
located on either side of the skull and contains organs for hearing and balance
Squamous
part of temporal bone, zygomatic process
tympanic
part of temporal bone, external auditory meatus and styloid process for muscle attachment
mastoid
part of temporal bone, mastoid process
petrous
part of temporal bone, (only visible underneath), middle ear, internal auditory meatus
Pinna (aka auricle)
visible classic ear, composed entirely of cartilage and skin (except for lobule ear lobe with no cartilage)
external auditory meatus
ear canal, extends from pinna to tympanic membrane, protects ear drums
The outer 1/3 is cartilaginous, whereas the inner 2/3s in boney
embryonic external ear
5 to 8 weeks shows development of the auricular hillocks that will eventually form the outer ear
external auditory meatus cartilaginous
contains hair (cilia) and sebaceous gland which produces cerum (ear wax)
primary functions of outer ear
collect and amplification of sound, localization, resonation, protect middle and inner ear from damage, cosmetic, erogenous (lobule sensitive to stimulation)
head related transfer function
outer ear resonance, individual specific yet plastic,
The net effect of the head, pinna, and ear canal is that sounds in the 2,000 to 4,000 Hz region are amplified by 10 to 15 dB.
noise in this range most hazerdous to hearing
tympanic membrane
ear drum, oval thin transparent membrane that seperates the external and middle ear
tympanic membrane is divided into 2 parts
pars flaccida (upper) and pars tensa (lower)
3 layers of pars tensa (in tympanic membrane)
- skin (outside)
- fibrous tissue
- mucosa (inside)
