Outer ear Flashcards
Pinna (auricle)
Outer, visible part of the ear
Aesthetic function only
Cartilage, skin, and muscles
Extrinsic
Pinna muscles connect pinna to the head
Intrinsic
Pinna muscle are small muscles within the pinna
External Auditory Meatus (EAM)
Also call external auditory canal (EAC) Two bends that help the protection of the ear drums 2-3 cm in length 6-8cm in diameter First 1/3 of canal is cartilage Last 1/3 is the bone portion
External Auditory Meatus (EAM) Cartilaginous
Hair follicles (Cilia) Sebaceous glands ( produce oil) Cerumenous glands ( mix with oil become ear wax )
What does the ear canal do ?
Protects ear drums Acoustic function (acts like a resonant tube)
Closed-open ear canal tube
Sound changes in the tube before it gets to the eardrum
Certain frequencies are amplified
Ear canal act like little hearing aids and boost small sounds like /s/
What is the range of Hz critical for hearing speech sounds?
Low frequencies: vowels are approx. 250-600Hz
High frequencies: fricatives are approx. 3000-4000Hz and are very soft
Ear canal give us boost where the softest sounds are being made
Sounds
Fluctuation in air pressure around a null that probated through a medium. ( capable of giving rise to hearing )
