Outer 6 Flashcards
How many moons does Uranus have
27
What are the 5 main moons of Uranus
Titiania, Oberon, Ariel, Umbriel and Miranda
What is the density of Uranus’ moons and what does this suggest
around 1400 Kgm^-3
Suggests that they are made of ice and rock
Features of Titania and Oberon
Heavily cratered
Not much geological activity
Less reflective than saturn’s moons (due to dirty ice surfaces)
Radiation Darkening - dark appearance due to radiation and high energy particles striking the surfaces of the moons. This causes chemical reactions that lead to build up of organic material
What is the darkest Uranian moon
Umbriel
Features of surface of Ariel
signs of resurfacing and cracks, caused by external tidal force from Uranus
Features of Miranda’s surface
wide range of terrrains ( ridges, valleys, oval faults etc) due to catastrophic ditruption more than once during its lifetime
How many moons does Neptune have
14
3 Main moons of Neptune
Proteus, Triton, Nereid
Features of Triton and Nereid orbits
Triton has a retrograde orbit, Nereid is prograde but has a very elliptical orbit (eccentricity 0.75)
Features of Triton
Smallest of the “large” outer solar system moons, after the Gallilean moons and Titan
Surface temp 37K
Thin nitrogen atmosphere
Nitrogen frost forms over the poles of the planet
Few craters suggests surface activity in the past
Lakes of water ices suggests water volcanism
How were Uranus’ rings discovered
Stellar occultation
How does stellar occultation work in relation to Uranus
Light from distant star observed
As Uranus passed in front of star and light levels dropped but it also flickered 40 mins before and after the main dip
Do all Jovian planets have rings
yes
How many rings does uranus have
9 rings
