Define ‘colonise’
settlers establishing political control and power over land
Define ‘custodianship’
people who have responsibilities in caring for, protecting, and maintaining County
Define ‘kinship’
(important for a SAC)
An Indigenous person’s relationship/responsibilities to other people, to Country and to natural resources
Define ‘nature’
The phenomena of the physical world collectively including plants, animals, landscapes and features of the Earth.
Define ‘remnant vegetation’
Those patches of native trees, shrubs, and grasses still left. It can be any shape and size.
Define ‘urbanisation’
The development and growth of towns and cities, as more people move to these locations.
Define ‘catchment area’
An area where water is collected by the natural landscape.
Define ‘country’
(important for a SAC)
A term used to describe the land, waterways, and seas in which Indigenous people are connected to.
Includes: laws, customs, language, cultural practice beliefs, family, identity, and spiritual connection.
Define ‘fragmentation’
Physical destruction or disintegration of continuous habitats into smaller units or patches.
Define ‘managed parks’
Areas of public land that are controlled by and are the responsibility of the Government.
Define ‘private lands’
Land that isn’t owned by the Government.
Define ‘riparian vegetation’
Plant habitats and communities along the river margins and banks.
Define ‘wilderness’
An environment that is big, remote, and untouched by humans. (or relatively untouched)
Define ‘microclimate’
The climate of a very small or restricted area.
Define ‘biome’
A large, naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat.
