outdoor and environmental studies Flashcards

1
Q

Climatic Variation

A

Australia experiences erratic temperatures, with long droughts during the El Nino stages, and severe flooding during the La Lina stages. These severe weather events can last up to many years, so native biodiversity has had to adapt. This is related to WPNP+SA as the kangaroo has adapted to have the ability to hop large distances to reach water sources during El Nino stages.

Q

Geological Stability

A

Australia is located on one tectonic plate, meaning there is minimal volcanic action. As a result, the soil in Australia is nutrient-poor. Native biodiversity, such as the mana gum, has had to adjust to this in WPNP+SA by being deep-rooted to allow it to reach nutrient-rich soil and thrive.

Q

GK’s relationship with WPNP+SA

A

The Gunai Kurnai people are an Indigenous group whose country is WPNP. Before the arrival of the Europeans, they perceived the land as … as they felt as though it provided them with water and shelter, therefore, they had to protect it in return. They interacted with WPNP+SA by being semi-nomadic, where they would go from WPNP in winter, where they would collect shellfish, to the Alps in summer, where they would collect Bogong moths. This interaction had a minimal impact on the environment as being semi-nomadic meant the biodiversity could rejuvenate and had time to grow.

Q

GK relationship with WPNP+SA today

A

The Gunai Kurnai are part of the Indigenous Ranger Program in WPNP. They perceive the land as a place of conservation and interact with it by educating people about shell middens and traditional land management practices. This positively impacts the environment as it builds a strong connection with the visitors, therefore they are more likely to preserve the environment.

Q

Commercial logging in Victoria; both sides

A

Great Forest National Park Working Group are for the proposed Great Forest NP. They believe that creating a park would provide additional protection for endangered species and protect water supply

The Forest Industry is against the proposed Great Forest NP. They believe that creating a national park would lead to over 200 jobs loses in the area due to logging no longer being allowed in certain areas

Q

Explaining Franklin River

A

In Tasmania, the hydroelectric-commission (HEC), alongside the Tasmanian government wanted to dam the Franklin River to reduce the cost of electricity and create more jobs. Bob Brown was a conservationist, whose aim was to protect sites such as Franklin River. Many like-minded people didn’t agree with the idea of damming the Franklin River. Together, they formed a group called the Wilderness Society, which was led by Bob Brown. The group held many non-violent protests and rallies to try and prevent the damming of the Franklin River

Name a RAP and explain why it was formed

A

GLaWAC was formed to formally acknowledge the Gunai Kurnai as Right People on Right Country. GLaWAC support mob by sharing knowledge of cultural burning with young Gunai Kurnai people to reduce the severity of bushfires, improve the health of the environment and build custodian connections to the land.

Q

Explanation of Act and Convention

A

The Flora and Fauna Guarantee Amendment Act 2019 (FFGAA 2019) is an act that works to conserve threatened species and for the identification and management of potentially threatening processes. It is a key piece of Victorian legislation that aims to provide a modern framework for the protection of Victorian biodiversity. Action statements are made for biodiversity, such as the Eltham copper butterfly and Murray cod, ensuring that threatening processes are mitigated and introducing management plans to ensure they can thrive.

Q

Community Action

A

Friends of Warrandyte State Park

18
Q

Explanation of community action

A

Friends of Warrandyte State Park (FOWSP) help sustain Warrandyte State Park. In conjunction with Parks Victoria to sustain the health of the environment. They educate and advocate for the community and interact with Warrandyte State Park by planting native plants such as basket grass to encourage bee pollination. Native plants also encourage other species in the environment that also rely on bee pollination. All in all, they work to protect, conserve, and both rejuvenate and regenerate native and local biodiversity

20
Q

explanation on 2 individual actions

A

ethical and sustainable consumerism is all about purchasing products and services that promote the efficient use of resources.

green home designing is about designing your home to be as energy-efficient as possible.
