Outcome measure Flashcards
what is the definition of outcome measure?
a test, measurement or scale which measures a particular attribute of interest to the patient or clinician, which can be influenced by an intervention
why do we have outcome measures?
- quantify patient’s progress
- monitor progress of treatment
- facilitate clinical decision making
- acquire baseline data to set a goal
- determine efficiacy of a treatment
how do we choose the appropriate outcome measure?
- we need to first see who is being measured, and what is being measured?
- condition-specific?
- site-specific?
- dimension-specific?
what are the 4 main categories in which the appropriate outcome measure is selected based on?
- body structure impairments
- body function impairments
- activity limitation
- participation restriction
what defines a reliable outcome measure?
outcome measures which provide similar values upon repeated administrations in unchanged patients
what are the 3 types of reliability?
- intra-rater reliability
- inter-rater reliability
- test-retest reliability
what is intra-rater reliability?
extent to which measurements taken by the same person are consistent
what is inter-rater reliability?
the extent to which measurements taken by different people are similar
what is test-retest reliability?
the extent to which patients who complete their own measurements provide similar results
what defines a valid outcome measure?
- a valid outcome measure would be determined by whether the outcome measure assess what it’s supposed to assess
what are the 4 types of validity?
- face validity
- content validity
- criterion validity
- construct validity
what is face validity?
on the surface, does the measure look valid?
what is content validity?
for measures with more than 1 component, are all the contents that we want to measure present?
what is criterion validity?
does the measure compare against our criteria/gold standard measure
what is construct validity?
does the measure behave as we expect it to, with other measures and variables
