Q

What is the function of gut microbacteria?

A
  • synthesis of essential amino-acids and vitamins
  • Produce an array of glycosidehydrolases and polysaccharide lysases, facilitating utilisation of otherwise indigestible food compounds
  • Ferment saccharides is the main source of energy for intestinal epithelial cells
  • Microbial de-polymerization of complex carbohydrates and proteins gives rise to mono- and oligomeric compounds that are subsequently fermented into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as well as to carbon dioxide and molecular hydrogen. Carbohydrate fermentation and shortchain fatty acid production significantly improve the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus
