Our Dynamic Universe Flashcards
What is Newtown’s first law?
“An object will remain at rest or continue to travel at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted upon by an unbalanced force”
What is Newton’s Second law?
“The acc acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the unbalanced force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass”
What is a Newton (N)?
The force required to accelerate 1kg by 1ms-2
What is mass?
The amount of matter something contains
What is weight?
The force an object experienced due to gravity acting upon its mass (W=mg, measured in Newtons)
What are the equations for tension?
T=ma+mg when tension is greater than weight, T=mg-ma when tension is less
How do you calculate the component of weight?
mgSin(Theta)
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Ep=Ek+Ew
What is an elastic collision?
A collision where both momentum and kinetic energy is conserved
What is an inelastic collision?
A collision where only momentum is conserved, not kinetic energy
What is the law of conservation of energy?
m1u1+m2u2=(m1+m2)v for a collision, swap v and u for an explosion
How do you calculate kinetic energy before a collision?
1/2m1u1^2+1/2m2u2^2
How do you calculate total kinetic energy after a collision?
1/2(m1+m2)v^2
What is the equation for impulse?
Ft=(Delta)mv
What is the change in momentum?
mv-mu
