Otitis Media Flashcards
How is otitis media caused?
A dysfunction of the Eustachian tube leads to gas volume in the middle ear being trapped so gas is slowly absorbed by the surrounding tissue leading to a negative pressure in the middle ear. This pressure draws fluid from the surrounding tissue into the tympanic cavity
What are the diagnostic features of ottitis media?
Oltagia Decreased hearing Bulging tympanic membrane (purulent, loss of landmarks, possibly red) Inflammation of the tympanic membrane Sleep disturbance Fever Irritability Reduced appetite
What are the risk factors of otitis media?
Day care attendance Older siblings Young age Native-American Absence of breastfeeding Supine feedings Lower socioeconomic status Abnormal craniofacial anatomy Immunological deficiency
How would otitis media be diagnosed?
By otoscopy but possibly by tympanometry or acoustic reflectometry
How is otitis media teated?
Usually it will go away by itself
Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used for pain relief
Tympanocentesis can be used to drain fluid from the middle ear
Amtibiotics are sometimes appropriate
