Q

What does Gymnosperm wood have?

A

tracheids. Pits (exposed areas of 1° wall) allow water movement, but ends aren’t “open.”

Q

What does Angiosperm wood?

A

2 broadest, “open” ended cells are vessels. (Vessels have only thin, 1° walls at the ends.)

Q

What is cavitation?

A

If cohesive forces are interrupted (the water column breaks, forming ‘bubbles’ in the xylem - cavitation), water flow may stop. Cavitated cells may never again useable for transport

Q

Differences between tropical plants and winter plants based on vessel elements

A

Tropical plants often have wide xylem cells. Temperate plants often have narrow ones

Q

What are 2 Adaptations for Water Conservation

A

Reduce surface area  reduce water loss ex. needles.Slow airflow  slow evaporation. ex. stomata in grooves or pores

Q

What are 4 adaptations to the tropics?

A

Dense tropical forests  shade. Large leaves  more light. Red undersides reflect usable light back into leaf.Drip tips  funnel off excess water
