Gestation
EDC
Parity:
Gravidity:
Gestation 26-42 wks
EDC: due date (estimated date of confinement)
Parity: number of live births
Gravidity: number of pregnancies (think sperm couldn’t make it past gravity and didnt get to birth)
Exercise during pregnancy
aerobic exercise fine, don’t do things in supine or risk of falls
resistive exercise: low weights with multiple repetitions, flexibility individualized
intensity: moderate exercise (3-4 METS)
duration: 45 mins max, thermoneutral environment, hydrate
frequency: 30 min/day
not the time to get fit
avoid extremes of ROM or excessive stress
No bottles to bed:
No bottles to bed: ear infections because Eustachian tubes can drip and mixing of fluids
apophysitis:
apophysitis: micro avulsions at bone cartilage junction
Number of times same activity/week, per year?
Limit 1 activity to max of 5 day/week
At least one day off
2-3 months off/year
Strength Training in Pediatrics
strength training AVOID MAXIMUM LIFTING
neural adaptations (MU activation, recruitment, coordination)
harder to hypertrophy because of circulating hormones
8-12 reps, 1-3 sets, 2-3x/week
no gender difference in response to resistance training (increases in strength, but to lesser extent)
females do not have testosterone increase after heavy resistance exercise
males 33% stronger
focus on proper technique and safety
AVOID MAXIMUM LIFTING
CHILD ABUSE
Most common.
CHILD ABUSE
Abusive head trauma is leading cause of child abuse fatalities
Sentinel injury (oral): minor injury, but may lead to more injury
Bucket handle fractures: very specific to abuse
Watch out for multiplanar bruising or neck
Really worried about ten 4 (torso, ears, neck, or less than 4 months)
Congenital dermal melanocytosis: look like bruises, but is a birth mark
child most likely to be abused under age of 1
MOST COMMON IS NEGLECT, then PHYSICAL, then SEXUAL, then PSYCHOLOGICAL
