other stuff Flashcards
population
the research population, the group of interest to study
sample
The subset of the population
convenience sampling
selected using the quickest and easiest means possible, people who are readily available from the population - volunteers
random sampling
when every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample - drawing names
Stratified sampling
population is divided into groups based upon relevant characteristics
selected from each group in proportion to how they appear in the population
- percentage of how much they are in the population
allocation
assigning participants to conditions in the experiment
random allocation
each member has equal chance of being assigned to each condition - flipping a coin
Extraneous variables:
Any variable that is not the independent that may affect research
Confounding variables:
Variables that affect results apart from the independent variable
what are confounding variables
an extraneous variable that has not been controlled
a type of variable that cannot be controlled for
confounding / extraneous variables
all confounding variables are extraneous variables, not all extraneous variables are confounding
