in what situation do you use “other specified feeding or eating disorder”
presentations in which symptoms characteristic of a feeding and eating disorder that cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning predominate but do not meet full criteria for any of the disorders in the feeding and eating diagnostic class
–> you are choosing to specify the reason that the presentation does not meet criteria for any specific disorder
list examples (5) of presentations that can be specified in the “other specified” designation
- ATYPICAL anorexia nervosa
- bulimia nervosa (OF LOW FREQUENCY and/or limited duration)
- binge eating disorder (OF LOW FREQUENCY and/or of limited duration)
- purging disorder
- night eating syndrome
define atypical anorexia nervosa
all of the criteria for AN are met except that despite SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT LOSS the patient’s weight is WITHIN or ABOVE the normal range
define BN/binge eating disorder of low frequency or limited duration
all of the criteria for the disorder is met except episodes occur less than once a week and/or for less than three months
define purging disorder
recurrent purging behaviour to influence weight or shape in the absence of binge eating
define night eating syndrome
recurrent episodes of night eating, manifested by eating AFTER AWAKENING from sleep or by excessive food consumption AFTER the evening meal
–> there is AWARENESS and recall of the eating
–> night eating not better explained by external factors such as changes in persons sleep wake cycle or by local social norms
when should you use “unspecified feeding or eating disorder”
applies to presentations in which symptoms characteristic of a feeding or eating disorder that cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social/occupational/or other important areas of functioning predominate but do not meet the full criteria for any of the disorders in the feeding and eating disorders diagnostic class
–> you do not specify why they dont meet criteria for a specific disorder
