Other Science Concepts Flashcards
The other words and concepts needed for the "Elements Test" on Wednesday the 19th
Groups / families
The vertical groups on the periodic table. They have the same chemical properties and the same number of valence electrons.
Periods
The rows on the periodic table. They have the same number of energy levels.
Compounds
Two or more atoms that are CHEMICALLY bonded. The individual atom’s properties are changed upon bonding.
Elements
Elements are a variant of a pure substance. It’s as far as something can be broken down.
Mixtures
Mixtures are NOT pure substances. It is 2 or more SUBSTANCES mixed together. The 2 substances are not chemically bonded, meaning they can broken physically. The properties of each substance stays the same, even if separated. Also called an “Impure Substance”
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which all of the parts are evenly distributed and can not be clearly seen.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which all of the parts are not evenly distributed and can be clearly seen, like a soup.
Matter
Something that has mass and takes up space.
Valence Electrons
The last layer of electrons in an atom
Ion
A charged atom.
Covalent Bond
A variant of a compound where the electrons are shared, water is an example.
Ionic bond
A compound that is formed from the transfer of electrons.
Atomic Number
The atomic number is the amount of Protons in an atom.
Atomic Mass
The atomic mass is the total of protons and neutrons in an atom
Solution
(A Sub-type of a mixture) Another word for a homogeneous mixture. The molecules in this type of mixture are blended together. They contain at least one solute and has the same properties throughout.
