Explain where in water will pressure be higher, at the top or bottom? (exemplar answer)
The bottom because there will be a greater mass of water above. Therefore there will be a more force and so the pressure will be greater.
TRUE OR FALSE: the force in water acts equally in all directions
TRUE
How is pressure exerted in a gas? (exemplar answer)
- Gas particles collide with the walls of a container because of their fast, random movement.
- When particles collide with the walls, they exert a force.
- As shown in the equation P=F/A, the force causes a pressure.
What are three factors affecting the pressure of gas?
- speed (temperature)
- NO. particles
- Volume of container
What is the definition of temperature? (exemplar)
: proportional to the average kinetic energy of all particles.
What is the definition of heat? (exemplar)
Total kinetic energy of all particles in the substance
What happens when we change the volume of a container?
- Assuming the temperature is constant, the speed of particles will remain the same.
- But because there is a smaller volume, the particles will collide more frequently with the walls.
- This creates a greater force acting on the container.
- So as P=F/A, the pressure increases.
Why does an increase in temperature lead to a higher volume?
- When a gas increases in temperature, the kinetic energy increases.
- This means the particles move faster and become more widely spaced.
- Therefore they occupy a larger area.
