How to do breast exam

A
  • inspect with patient arms by side
  • then arms behind head (tenses skin)
  • then hands on hips (tenses pec major)
  • look for masses, scars, skin changes, peau d’orange, dimpling, nipple retraction, pagets disease
  • then patient lays down
  • inspect skin color, thickening, venous pattern and edema, areola pigmentation, nipple pigmentation, shpae, ulceration, discharge
  • palpate nipple to axillary tail
  • palpate axillary, supraclavicular and infraclavicular lymph nodes

A

-facial flushing, distended neck veins, inspiratory stridor and elevation of JVP upon raising patients both arms above his/her head
