What are the assumptions of the Cognitive area of psychology?
Thoughts cause our behaviour and are central to understanding how we function
Treats people like ‘Computers’ with sensory information coming in and out behaviour etc being the output. It attempts to work out how the processing works in between
What are the assumptions of the Social area of psychology?
Our behaviour is influenced more by people around us than by our personality and personal choices
All behaviour occurs in a social context, even when no-one is present. ie. you behave in ways that reflect your social status, the groups to which you feel you belong
What are the assumptions of the Developmental area of psychology?
Parts of the development of your behaviour are determined by nature and some are determined bye nurture
Assumes that children are immature human beings, not miniature adults, and therefore, behaviour changes as we age

Human behaviour can be explained by the structure and functioning of our internal biological systems
Human behaviour can be studied using objective scientific techniques such as scanners and chemical tests
What are the assumptions of the Individual Differences area of psychology?
Focuses on the differences that exist between individuals behaviour instead of making generalisations about people in groups
The measurement of characteristics like personality and IQ is issue and relevant to understanding the differences in behaviour between individuals

The personality is made up of three parts - the id, ego and superego and these heavily influence our behaviour
What are the assumptions of the Behaviourist area of psychology?
All our behaviour comes from our environments. Our behaviour is determined by what we learn from our experiences. There are three strands of behaviourism - Social Learning Theory, Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning
