What are the different types of polyps?
Inflammatory colon polyps
Hyperplastic polyps
Adenomatous polyps
Villous polyps
What are inflammatory colon polyps?
Found in pts with IBD - commonly UC
Known as pseudopolyps - not proper polyps but rather inflammatory manifestations of IBD, usually benign an unlikely to become cancerous
What are hyperplastic polyps?
Hyperplasia - abnormal increase in the numbers of cells resulting in the gross enlargement of a polyp.
Low risk of turning cancerous.
What are adenomatous polyps?
70% of all polyps found in colon
Can become cancerous but typically takes many many years
> 1cm = higher risk
Neoplastic
What are villous adenomas?
Type of adenomatous polyp.
Greater potential of becoming cancerous - associated with larger adenomas and more severe degrees of dysplasia
Occur mor frequently in the rectum and recto-sigmoid.
Sessile structures that appear velvety or cauliflower-like projections
What are the symptoms of polyps?
Most asymptomatic
Symptomatic: Blood in stool/rectal bleeding Abdo pain Change in bowel habit N/V
How are colon polyps diagnosed?
FOBT
Colonoscopy + flexible sigmoidoscopy
Capsule endoscopy
Stool DNA
What are th management for colon polyps?
Polypectomy - few pedunclated or sessile polyps
Colonic resection - multiple intestinal polyps associated with FAP - only feasible option
What is the WHO definition of diarrhoea?
3 or more loose stools or stools with increased liquid per day
What is acute diarrhoea?
Lasting less the 14 days
What is chronic diarrhoea?
Lasting more then 14 days
