What happens in Act 2, scene 1?
The action moves to Cyprus:
- A storm has destroyed the Turkish fleet and separated the Venetian Ships.
- Cassio’s ship arrives in Cyprus.
- Othello’s ship finally arrives and Desdemona is very relieved.
- Iago suggests further motives for his plan to destroy Othello, Desdemona and Cassio.
What does the change in setting show?
The change in setting isn’t just a change in location - it’s also a symbolic transition.
1} The main characters travel from their homes in peaceful and civilised venice, to an unfamiliar “warlike isle”. Cyprus is a place of conflict and disorder.
2} The characters are more isolated in Cyprus which means that Iago can prey on their weaknesses more easily. The island setting also gives the rest of Othello a claustrophobic feeling.
How is the storm important to the plot?
1} The storm is significant to the plot because it quickly gets rid of the threat of war.
2} The storm also foreshadows the events of the rest of the play.
What happens in Act 2, scenes 1-2?
Othello and Desdemona are deeply in love.
1} Othello’s reunion with Desdemona highlights their mutual love and affection.
2} Othello highlights the equality in their relationship by calling Desdemona “my fair warrior”.
What are Iago’s three reasons for his plots?
1} Othello’s slept with Emilia.
2} He’s in love with Desdemona.
3} Cassio’s slept with Emilia.
What does the herald do?
A herald reads a proclamation - the city will celebrate their military victory and Othello’s marriage.
What happens in Act 2, scene 3?
- Othello leaves Cassio to keep order on the island as he and Desdemona go to consumate their marriage.
- Iago tries to make Cassio admit that he has feelings for Desdemona.
- Roderigo provokes Cassio who chases him.
- Cassio wounds Montano.
- Iago advises Cassio to try and convincce Desdemona to help him regain his position as Othello’s lieutenant.
What dramatic features does Shakespeare use?
- Act 2 scene 3 provides some action.
- This commotion is brought to a sudden halt by Othello’s entrance.
What does the fight ruin?
The fight ruins Othello’s and Desdemona’s reunion.
What becomes clear?
Iago’s methods start to become clear.
