Q

The course of river can be mapped by where the source of a river begins, and where it ends. Please describe the basic flow or a river the beginning to the end. What sort of landmarks are created with a river.

A

For a river, the beginning is in the high mountains. Rivers begin as snow melts and runs downhill. The pathway downriver takes one through meanders, and can go through creating oxbow lakes and flood plains. Eventually, the river ends at the mouth where it meets another body of water.

Q

In an estuary, the organisms must be able to tolerate a wide range of temp of salinity condition. Why is this so? Where are estuaries located? WHen is the largest mangrove Forest in American

A

Estuaries are bodies of water that occur where fresh water from land drainage meets the water of an ocean or an inland sea. Organisms that live here must deal with a drastic change in salinity. These zones can serve as a transition stage for some fish where they make a passage from fresh to saltwater. The largest mangrove forest in America are in Florida’s Everglades region.

A

is a measure of the salt concentration. Oceans have more salt than freshwater ecosystems.

flowing or standing water.

A

For example, the difference between a pond and a lake is whether the water is standing (pond) or flowing (lake).
