OTC and prescription sumatriptan - age restriction
18-65 yrs only
Patient’s husband comes into pharmacy and would like to purchase some sumatriptan tabs for his wife who is suffering from a migraine.
Her PMR is as follows
Susan Davies DOB 03/07/1945. Omeprazole, propranolol 10mg prn. Can you make this sale?
No because sumatriptan not licensed for over 65s.
directions for sumatriptan
Take one tablet as soon as possible after the first signs of a migraine. If your symptoms come back you can take another tablet after 2 hours.
how many tabs of sumatriptan can you take in a day
Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. If you do not get any relief from the first tablet do not take a second tablet for the same attack.
A lady comes in to the pharmacy. you diagnose her as having a migraine. you have sumatriptan 50mg tabs available to sell. Her pmr is as follows
A. Jones. DOB 10/11/1975
- ramipril 5mg OD, candesartan 2mg OD, omeprazole 20mg, sertraline 50mg OD.

No
she has high blood pressure so it is contraindicated
contraindicated in heart porblems, angina etc. also taking sertraline - serotonin syndrome but this is less of a problem compared to the cirulatory issues
what does migraleve pink contain
paracetamol + codeine for head pain
buclizine for nausea

children vs adults
Children aged 12 - 14 , swallow one pink tablet with water at the first sign of a migraine. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours.
Adults and children over 15 years: swallow 2 tablets with water at the first sign of a migraine. Do not take more than 2 tablets in total in 24 hours.
what does migraleve yellow contain
paracetamol and codeine - they are taken if needed after the first dose of migraleve pink (which also contains buclizine)

migraines have been diagnosed by doctor
migraleve pink and yellow tabs dose for children 12-15
one pink tab (buc, cod, para) at the first sign of migraine attack.
if migraine persists, one yellow tab four hours after pink, then every 4 hours.
max 4 tabs (1 pink, 3 yellow in 24 hours)
migraleve pink and yellow doses for >16s
2 pink tab (buc, cod, para) at the first sign of migraine attack.
if migraine persists, 2 yellow tab four hours after pink, then every 4 hours.
max 8 tabs (2 pink, 6 yellow in 24 hours)
