OT Theo Themes (Term 1) Flashcards
- God can do what no one else can do
- seen in the coming of Jesus
- God is the source of life; vegetation, living creatures in the water, sky, and on land, and human kind.
- God’s work of creation is Good
- God’s work of creation is complete
- When God wants to do great things, He uses 1-2 people, individual, family, or small group
- take joy in the small tasks where no one sees you, God sees you and will reward you in the kingdom of heaven
- Sometimes the tasks that are the smallest are the most valuable; Mary & the Spirit
- God primarily does two things: Creates and saves
- Not only does God exist, he chooses to create
- God creates according to His own nature; He creates light, we later learn that He is light. Creates life, later learn that He is the living God
- God creates day-by-day, progressively until he has completed what he set out to make
- God’s word is his instrument of creation. Therefore, his words effect orderliness, life and goodness
- Evil can never ultimately thwart the saving purposes of God; We have not only read the first chapter, but we have also read the final chapter… GOD wins.
- Man is a free will human agent
-God formed Man from the dust
-God breathed into man the breath of life
-God takes special care in the creation of humans, in comparison to rest of the universe
-Man is the custodian of creation
FOUR QUALITIES
-Dignity, purpose, freedom, power
-The abuse of God’s image dishonours God
- God gives us what we need but not always what we want. Will we be content with this?
Romans 8:28 “We know that God causes all things to work together for good…”
- Evil can never ultimately thwart the saving purposes of God
- Sometimes when God gives people the desire of their hearts, when they are asked for out of wrong motives, the answer if God’s judgment
- Progressive Revelation is as history advances (As history advances, God reveals more about Himself)
-We have not only read the first chapter (GEN 1-8) but we have also read the final chapter (Rev21)… GOD WINS!
-God reveals a new aspect of his self-identification, namely, “I am God Almighty” - aspect of progressive revelation
-New Revelation is relevant for renewal of the promises;
God will multiply Abraham exceedingly, keep His covenant, extend His covenant, God will give him a new name to express his reality, kings shall come forth from Abraham, land of Canaan is God’s gift to Abraham’s descendants
-God progressively reveals himself throughout Israel’s history
-God’s self-revelation is always appropriate to the life setting in which it was made
-The rev. extends to the time of Jesus-who is the full and final revelation of whom God is.
- God is sovereign and also unilateral in his call - God is sovereign in election
- Promise between God and Abraham was unilateral and unconditional
- These promises have an individual and universal application
- God’s actions always coincide with the right time
- God’s timing is perfect; he is never early, he is never late, and he is always on time
- Took 25 years for Abraham to see the fulfilment of a promised son (God’s timing)
- the covenant is given to people who are already in relationship with God
- Election precedes the covenant
- Man as a sinner has two natures; God like (creative) and devil like (destructive)
- Man is the pinnacle of creation
- God formed man from the dust (clay model)
- Abuse of “God’s image” dishonours God
- Man is God’s gardener
- God’s creation is good; however, human experience contradicts this picture
- Genesis 3:1-24 explains the discrepancy between man’s goodness in creation and his badness in society
- Judgment is often self-imposed. God’s blessing becomes judgment because of attitudes.
- Sometimes God’s judgment is delayed because of God’s patience
- When God gives people the desire of their hearts, when they are asked for our of wrong motives, the answer is God’s judgment
- God tests people to show them what is in their hearts
- God excludes the generation of the redeemed from the promised land
- Purpose of the wilderness testings - to humble Israel, to show what was in their heart, to show whether they would obey, to discipline his people as a father disciplines his son
TEN THINGS I LEARNED IN THIS CLASS
- God creates us according to His own nature - He creates light, and we later learn that He IS light. Creates LIFE, we later learn that He is the living God.
- God’s rest is about completing what he had begun; it is not about, ‘taking a break’ or about ‘recouping his energy’
- Similarities between Noah and Adam - both agents of a start
- Sometimes God gives us what we need but not what we want - Sometimes when God gives people the desire of their hearts, when they are asked for out of wrong motives, the answer is God’s judgment
- The wilderness testings - very quickly an ungrateful attitude can turn into a habit of un-gratitude (Marah)
- Christians today use communion as a time of covenant renewal - we celebrate the Lord’s supper
- Sometimes the smallest tasks are the greatest (Mary & Jesus) - we will be rewarded in heaven
- God can do what no one else can do - seen in coming of Jesus
- Four qualities of Adam - Dignity, purpose, freedom, power
- Man has both God-like and devil-like natures; creative vs destructive
