Colorectal cancer, loss of anal muscle control, diverticulitis, trauma

What is the preferred anti fungal to treat infections around the stoma?
Nystatin powder BID (TID for candida) Apply under appliance, dust off excess and use for 1 week after infection clears

What are some foods that can cause diarrhea?
broccoli, beer, green beans, highly seasoned foods, sports drinks with lots of sugars
What foods can thicken stoma output and help with diarrhea?
bananas, potatoes, yogurt, cheese, apple sauce
Which ostomy is EC and time released preparation completely ineffective?
Ileostomies; partially effective in colostomy
WIth urostomy, ammonia odour may indicate what complication?
Crystalline phosphate deposits

stoma fragility, mucosal damage and blood in pouch
How can you treat crystalline phosphate deposits?
Dab the stoma with vinegar-water mix or acidify urine with cranberry juice as prophylaxis
What are skin barriers usually composed of?
gelatin, pectin, cellulose
What are barrier rings?
Alternative to pastes; they protect the skin and fill in uneven areas
What are the 4 common problems with ostomies?
Leakage leading to peristomal irritations; electrolyte and fluid deficiencies; allergies; drug absorption
Name deodorants that can be used to neutralize odours from foods
activated charcoal and bismuth subgallate
With ileostomies, you have to watch out for poor absorption of which drugs?
