Ostomies Flashcards
Ostomy
connects GI tract to abdominal wall or lumen of another hollow organ
man made fistula
Stoma
opening of the ostomy
Gastrostomy
thru abd wall to the stomach
drainage, feeding
Jejunostomy
J-tube thru abd wall to jejunum for feeding
Colostomy
Thru abd wall to Colon for drainage of stool
End Colostomy
proximal end of colon brought to skin for stool drainage
Hartmanns pouch
non functional intestine closed and left in situ
Double barrel colostomy
Both ends are brought to stomach
one functional, the other non-functional
used for temporary diversion- where resection is required emergently
Loop colostomy
with supporting rod
cutting the sigmoid colon but not completely so you have two stoma openings- one proximal and one distal
Why doesn’t an ileostomy or colostomy close?
Epitheliazation (mucosa to skin)
If the plastic tube from G-tube or J-tube is removed, how fast can the hole to stomach or jejunum close?
In a matter of hours!
What is a “tube check”
Gastrografin contrast study to confirm that G-tube of J-tube is within the lumen of the stomach or jejunum
