What is osteoporosis?
A
- disorder affecting the skeletal system characterised by loss of bone mass.
- Defined as presence of bone mineral density (BMD) of less than 2.5 standard deviations (SD) below the young adult mean density.

What are the risk factors for osteoporosis?
A
- female!!
- Age!!
Other:
- corticosteroid use
- smoking
- alcohol
- low BMI
- FHX

What is FRAX or QFracture used for?
A
Screening tool to assess the 10-year risk of a patient developing a fragility fracture.

What is used to diagnose osteoporosis?
A
DEXA scan looks at the hip and lumbar spine. If either have a T score of < -2.5 then treatment is recommended.

A
Fragility fracture

What is the first line treatment of osteoporosis?
A
- Oral bisphosphonate such as alendronate.
* May offer vit D and calcium supplementation
