Define:
A
Infection of the bone leading to inflammation , necrosis and new bone formation
Can be acute, subacute and chronic
Usually due to staphylococcus aureus or group A Streptococcus

Aetiology:
A
Bacterial skin inoculation (trauma, operative, chronic skin ulcers and haematogenous spread)

Risk factors:
A
Diabetes Immunosuppression Iv drug use Prostheses Sickle cell anaemia

Symptoms:
A
Pain in the affected area Fever Malaise Rigors Hx of skin lesions, sore throat, trauma or operations

Signs:
A
Localised erythema Tenderness Seropurulent puss from site Swelling Warmth Painful limited movement

Epidemiology:
A
Mostly in young children
<20% in adults

Investigations;
A
FBC
Blood Cultures
ESR
CRP
Swabs of wound or discharge
Radiographs - osteopenia, soft tissue swelling, periosteal thickening
Radioisotope scan
