What is the pathophysiology of osteomyelitis & what are the most common causes?
A
Osteomyelitis is infection & inflammation of the bone/ bone marrow.
Due to metastatic haematogenous spread or local infection.
Most common cause: Staphylococcus aureus
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Salmonella in sickle-cell patients

What is the clinical presentation of osteomyelitis?
A
- Fever
- Local pain
- Erythema
- Sinus formation (in chronic osteomyelitis)

What investigations would you do for osteomyelitis?
A
- CT/ MRI/ bone scan (lytic centre with ring of sclerosis)
- Bone biopsy & culture

How do you treat osteomyelitis?
A
4-6wks (start IV);
- Flucloxacillin
- Fusidic acid
