osmosis(the actually important part) Flashcards
What is osmosis?
Net movement of water from high water potential to low water potential through a semi permeable membrane
requirements for osmosis
Partially permeable membrane, water potential difference, water molecules
what happens when an animal cell is placed in a isotonic solution?
The animal cell’s shape remains the same as before.
what happens when an animal cell is placed in a hypotonic solution?
The animal cell becomes swollen and lysed as water enters the cell.(big joe’s cells)
what happens when an animal cell is placed in a hypertonic solution?
The animal cell crenates as water leaves the cell
what happens when a plant cell is placed in a isotonic solution?
The plant cell is flaccid as water is neither entering the cell nor exiting(0 net movement)
what happens when an plant cell is placed in a hypotonic solution?
The plant cell is turgid as water is entering the cell(the cell cannot lyse as it has a cell wall and is in the optimum state)
what happens when an plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution?
The plant cell becomes plasmolysed as water leaves the cell
why is the hypotonic state ideal for plants?
The vacuole exerts a lot of turgal pressure onto the cell wall and pushes it outwards when in the hypotonic state. This allows plants to stay upright as they have no skeleton.
