Osmosis and diffusion glossary Flashcards
diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until equilibrium (a balance) is reached
solute
a substance that dissolved in a liquid(solvent) to from a solution
solvent
a liquid which dissolves a substance( solute) to form a solution
concentrated solution
a mixture which contains lots of dissolved solute particles
concentration
the number of particles of solute in a particular volume of solvent
dilute concentration
a solution which contains only a few solute particles
isotonic solution
a solution which has the number of solute particles as inside the cell
hypotonic solution
a solution which has a low concentration of solute particles that inside the cell
what would happen if a cell was placed in a hypotonic solution?
water particles would move into the cell by osmosis.
hypertonic solution
a solution which has a higher concentration of solute particles that inside the cell
what would happen if a cell was placed in a hypertonic solution?
water will move out of the cell by osmosis
osmosis
the diffusion(movement) of water molecules from an area of high concentration of water to an area of low concentration of water across a partially permeable membrane
partially permeable membrane
a membrane which allows certain molecules to pass though it, but not others.
