Osmosis Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration.
How does water cross the cell membrane?
Through osmosis.
What are 3 possible situations that can result from osmosis?
- Isotonic
- Hypotonic
- Hypertonic
What is isotonic?
Water inside cell = water outside cell & = amount of water moving in and out of cell.
What is hypotonic?
Water outside cell > than that inside of cell.
What is hypertonic?
Water inside the cell > outside of the cell. Water moves out of the cell. This may cause the cell to shrink (plasmodiasis).
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from higher concentration areas to lower concentration areas.
What is the difference between osmosis and diffusion?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules, whereas diffusion is the movement of molecules.
