osmosis Flashcards
learn osmosis
hypertonic
The concentration of solutes is greater outside the cell less on inside
hypotonic
The concentration of solutes is less on the outside and more on the inside
isotonic
The concentration of solutes is equal
solute
Any substance that is dissolved in a liquid
What is ideal for plant cells
hypotonic (more water inside)
What is ideal for animal cells
isotonic (equal solutes/ water on both sides)
Lyse
To burst (happens in animal cells when it is hypotonic because there is too much water)
Osmosis
A form of passive transport only refers to water
Passive transport
No energy required automatic
Active transport
AcTive transPort (ATP) energy required
facilitated diffusion
still passive but is assisted through protein channels for more giant molecules
Simple diffusion
In passive transport, no energy molecules pass through the bi-layer
phospholipid bilayer
Made up of phospholipids, the head is polar (water-loving), and the tail is nonpolar
Phospholipid
made of 2 fatty acids, a phosphate group, and a glycerol molecule
Fluid mosaic model
Fluid means it’s always moving, and Mosaic means it is like a puzzle because of lots of parts (protein channels Ect)
