Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
Net movement of particles across a concentration gradient, across a partially permeable membrane
How is osmosis different to diffusion
Osmosis = Water
Diffusion = Solid and Gases
What is a partially permeable membrane
A membrane that has small holes within it
What molecules are allowed in osmosis
Oxygen and Water as they are small molecules
Osmosis Practical (6 marks)
cut equal-sized pieces of potato
blot with tissue paper and weigh
put pieces into different concentrations of sucrose solution for a few hours
remove, blot with tissue paper and reweigh
Repeat experiment with a whole potato
Compare results
Isotonic meaning
Same concentration of water inside and outside of cell
Hypertonic meaning
Water is more dilute on the inside of cell, osmosis will occur
Hypotonic meaning
Water is more dilute on the outside of cell, water leaves cell
Examples of osmosis
Small and Large intestine
