Osmosis Flashcards
Def of Osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a solution with a low to high concentration of solute across a partially permeable membrane
What is a Partially Permeable Membrane?
A partially permeable membrane only lets some substances pass and others not.
3 types of Osmosis Solutions
Hypertonic, Hypotonic, Isotonic
What is a hypotonic solution?
The solute (e.g. salt) concentration outside the cell is LOWER than inside the cell. So water will move from outside to inside the cell.
What is a hypertonic solution?
The solute (e.g. salt) concentration is HIGHER outside the cell, so water will move OUT of the cell
What is an Isotonic Solution?
Solutions outside and inside the cell have EQUAL concentrations of solute = equilibrium
What is Dynamic equilibrium?
An equal and constant movement of particles (like water) from one side to the other
What is Lysis?
A cell is bursting
What is Crenated?
A cell is shrinking
What is Turgor Pressure?
A force within the plant cell that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall
What is Turgid?
Central vacuole is full of water so it causes the plasma membrane to push against the cell wall
What is Flaccid?
Plant cells that have some water in the central vacuole, but the plasma membrane isn’t pushing on the cell wall, so the plants get droopy.
What is Plasmolysed?
Plant cells that shrink because no pressure on the cell wall
