Osmosis Flashcards

1

Osmosis def

A

the diffusion of water molecules form an area of high water concentration
to an area of low water concentration
across a partially permeable membrane

Q

Hypotonic

A

Hypotonic is when the water potential of the solution is HIGHER than the cell

  • so net movement of water is INTO the cell
  • cell bursts

In Plants:

  • vacuole swells
  • vacuole and cytoplasm are pushed against the cell wall
  • cell becomes turgid

Q

Isotonic

A

when water passes into and out of the cell in equal amounts
- cell stays the same

SAME in plants

Q

Hyper tonic

A

solution has a lower water potential than the cell

  • net movement of water molecules is out of the cell
  • cell SHRINKS

In Plants:

  • cell becomes flaccid
  • cytoplasm and membrane PULL away from the cell wall
  • this is called plamolysis
