Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis def
the diffusion of water molecules form an area of high water concentration
to an area of low water concentration
across a partially permeable membrane
down a water potential gradient
what is water potential
what has the highest water potential
the potential( likelihood) of water moving into and out of a solution
Pure WOTAH
what are the three different types of solution that can affect water potential
1) Hypotonic
2) Isotonic
3( Hypertonic
Hypotonic
Hypotonic is when the water potential of the solution is HIGHER than the cell
- so net movement of water is INTO the cell
- cell bursts
In Plants:
- vacuole swells
- vacuole and cytoplasm are pushed against the cell wall
- cell becomes turgid
Isotonic
when water passes into and out of the cell in equal amounts
- cell stays the same
SAME in plants
Hyper tonic
solution has a lower water potential than the cell
- net movement of water molecules is out of the cell
- cell SHRINKS
In Plants:
- cell becomes flaccid
- cytoplasm and membrane PULL away from the cell wall
- this is called plamolysis
